Singers

I've been thinking about singers and singing...
  • Check out Andrew Horn's documentary about Klaus Nomi available at hulu.com: The Nomi Song
I love the costumes and the stylized movement. Somewhere I have a little book about Cubist Theater ---or maybe I gave it away--- which has pictures of costumes for Satie's Parade and similar stuff, perhaps even the Tzara costume mentioned in the video. Have to re-read that. It's been nearly 20 years since I looked at that book.
  • Nancy Wilson s(w)inging Duke Ellington's Satin Doll versus Terry Callier's attempt to turn Johnny Mercer's playful and impressionistic lyric into a rock ballad narrative. Or that's how I hear it. I wonder if he pays a recording royalty for that. Have to pontificate about copyright some other day.
  • OK here's another one: Thao with the Get Down Stay Down; You've Really Got A Hold On Me versus The Supremes versus Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.

I recall Morton Feldman talking about his opera said something to the effect that a singer is an actor playing the part of a singer.
